Justice for POW’s It’s great to see the Australia Government recognise the Special Service given by the POW’s. These men and women served in terrible conditions doing jobs that were often lethal at the hands of a cruel enemy. I thought we lived in a Country where justice was equal for all. I thought that if someone was killed by the actions of another then those responsible for the death would be made to answer for their crime. It would seem I was wrong. If you put a uniform on and serve in the Defence of this Country it would seem that basic justice does not apply. Rust is Cool

We did one of the classic day drives for our area on the weekend. The Rain Forest Way. This is a great drive with plenty see and some great side roads into some nice National Park areas.

We extended the drive out to Woodenbong and the scenic drive around there. The whole drive is an easy day drive from Brisbane. There are lots of great photographic locations and interesting places to stop and eat. The roads in the Woodenbong are are a bit on the average side.

I am not the go into the wild style of wild life photographer. I like the civilised approach of being able to go back to the hotel after a nice walk around a zoo. My wife has a love of visiting zoo’s when we go to cities we haven’t been to before. My Big Cat photographs have been captured from a number of zoo’s.

It is very sad when you think that in the future the only place that many of these big cats will exist is in Zoo’s. I would love the chance to photograph these awesome creatures in the wild (not to far from a Hotel… )

Faces of China

The wife and I just spent 3 weeks in China…

lets get the politics out of the way first.

Communism vs Democracy.

China has a very large divide between rich and poor however what struck me the most were the people were happy I don’t really think they cared about the label attached to the politics of China. When we went shopping in the area’s where people had money to spend you could have been in any modern western city. The amount of brand name luxury goods stores is simply incredible.

We also managed to spend a little time in a small village far from the glitz of modern shopping malls. The people were friendly and happy. China is a country of incredible contrast but the one constant we found were the very friendly people.

We spent most of our time in Shanghai, this mega city has so much to offer. We didn’t stay in a hotel that tourists normally stay in and the area we were in wasn’t a tourist spot. We had a good chance to walk the streets and enjoy the sights and sounds of this area of Shanghai.

We visited the Old Town in Shanghai and Nanjing Road the more traditional tourist traps of Shanghai. I was getting very sick of being asked if I wanted to buy knock off watches and hand bags. Every 10 minutes or less someone would be in your face trying to sell you a fake Rolex. The government of China really needs to take action on this kind of activity. I had to chase some very aggressive individuals away from my wife on a number of occasions. Overall I wouldn’t visit Nanjing Road or Old Town again because of the problems we faced there.

Beijing is another Mega City that is unfortunately being choked by cars. This city is simply beyond its capacity to handle the vast number of cars on the road. Couple that with what would have to be the most lawless drivers I have ever seen and Beijing is simply a city that will be killed by the car. The government there seems to be trying to limit the number of cars but it is simply to little to late for Beijing and the car.

Xian is a city of wasted opportunity this city has so much to offer and it would have to be one of the most interesting cities in China. Like Beijing it is being killed by this need to own a car.

Organised tours! I want to return to Xian and Beijing because both of these cites have so much to offer. I will not however do an Organised tour again. I can tell you now I am sick of Jade shops. So much time was wasted being marched around Jade shops. I was there in China to see China not the inside of over priced Jade shops.

Apsley Falls

Apsley Falls are part of the Waterfall Way group of falls. It is a bit of trip from the other waterfalls. We had packed up camp and were on the way home when we found out where these falls were. They are absolutely worth a visit.

They are a long drop waterfall there are however lots of lovely small features like the one in the photograph here.

Bay Of Islands

In May 2011 we did a road trip to Melbourne (From Brisbane). No sane person does a trip to Melbourne in winter, in this case we didn’t have a choice. Our new caravan needed some major fixes and the only place that could be done was at the chassis builders workshop.

One of the great draw cards of Victoria is the Great Ocean Road. On the Great Ocean Road the main draw card is the 12 Apostles. There are less than 12 now due to erosion by the Southern Ocean. At last count I believe there are 7 left standing.

The 12 Apostles as a coastal feature certainly has a limited life span. What surprised me about this area is that not far west of the 12 Apostles is an area called the Bay of Islands. The surprise is that the Bay of Islands is to me at least more scenic than the 12 Apostles.
